Diaphanous Tether for flute quartet

I wrote Diaphanous Tether in the fall of 2012. The great agility, versatility, and beautifully transparent timbre of the flute made it an attractive instrument to explore. The piece experiments with the interesting color possibilities of four flutes playing together in various registers, while traveling through various moods and atmospheres. The opening section expresses a primal energy, followed by introspection. A character of persistent eccentricity surfaces, but eventually returns to its primal roots. Though I strove to use a good deal of dissonance in an expressive way, the presence of consonance serves as a tether for both the audience and the performers.
